Stock List December 2012

The stock list has finally been compiled and published today! It can be found here. Please contact Tim if you have any questions about any of the pianos listed.

The planned additions to the site in the next few months are as follows:

  • Categorise pianos according to their physical dimensions – Handy for working out if an instrument will fit in a planned space.
  • Blog post on the common misconceptions surrounding pianos.
  • Blog post on the some of the factors to be considered when choosing a piano.
  • Blog post on the comparison of real piano vs electronic piano.

Hammers

A Little Extra Help

Piano frames can be heavy things, we think that this frame weighs around 200Kg. The addition of a rather chunky crane to the toolkit has made a big difference (to the health of our backs if nothing else). This Bechstein Grand is the latest project and restringing is under way.

Moved in

After a month of travelling, this was my first week back at work and today I moved in the last of 9 pianos!

It’s been a bit back breaking for the last two or three days getting things in and out of the van but it’s great to have it done and the old storage unit emptied.

Now it’s time to start in earnest. The summer holiday is out of the way and there’s a serious amount of restringing to get done and a detailed stock list to compile.

Spanish Barrel Piano c.1960’s

Disassembled and ready to have strings removed/replaced. This is a delightful little tabletop instrument which has 6 different tunes on it’s barrel and is hand cranked. Spain continued to make these charming instruments decades after production had stopped elsewhere in Europe.

This is a customer’s piano and will not be for sale.

First piano in!

The new larger workspace (about twice the size of the previous place) has it’s first piano. Much to and fro-ing will now ensue, while we move in tools, boxes of felts, stocks of wood and most importantly another five or six pianos.

Under Construction

A very warm, 1990’s website style welcome to the new website of Tim Howes – Piano Tuner, Restorer and Musician based in Oxfordshire UK.

Just a quick note to say that the pages will be being fleshed out and updated with content in the next few weeks as Tim gives the information to me. Including pictures of stock items, advice on piano care and endorsements of Tim’s work. The plan is to provide at least weekly blog updates in the Workshop blog on the pianos that Tim is working on and other interesting music projects. In the mean time please contact Tim with any questions about pianos and webmaster@theoldivories.co.uk (myself) for queries or comments about the site.

Thanks

Helen
